Cherife, 1903 Austro-Hungarian mission

Another picture from the 1903 issue of “Sport Universel Illustre”, also sent by Adrien Deblaise, shows the Hungarian desert-bred import Cherife, from the same importation as Hagayle below. No further information. Perhaps RJ or Laszlo know more.

  1. The gray mare, “Cherifa” was bred by the Shammar tribe, states Fadlallah in his traveller’s guide.
She called 214 Scherifa in Bábolna.
Scherifa was measured 158 cm at the withers. Not too big,but not small. She was 8 years old, when Fadlallah bought her from Chazim Pasha.
Her strain is “Gehelt El Scherif” , her sire was a Saklavy.I don’t want to comment about her descendants, because the only source for me is Kwiatkowski’s book just now. There are some mistakes in connention with Scherifa,i think. For example the date of birth, the sireline.I wonder, if this mare had no more than a foal in Babolna. The same surprise as in the case of the real beautiful Hagyale.Or maybe R.J.has right and they covered by partbred(shagya)stallions too?
The best source is the original studbook, but to open that is not possible in this minute.

  2. She was part of the Al Khamsa Roster Proposal on Babolna horses that passed recently. We have a different photo of her, after she was in Europe. I will send you that.

Her entry in the proposal reads:

    214 Scherife, shown below
1894 (1896?) grey mare by a Saqlawi out of “Gehelt el Scherif” (Kuhaylan al-Sharif), bred by the Shammar, purchased from Hazaim Pasha (deputy military commander
in Bagdad, brother-in-law to Sultan Abdul Hamid, and a breeder of Arabian horses) and imported in 1902 to Babolna by Gen. Haddad.

    Dam of 10 Gazal

  3. 214 Scherife’s only foal of which I know was her daughter 10 Gazal, but 10 Gazal was a major Babolna broodmare, dam of the stallions Koheilan VIII, his full brother Koheilan IV-3, and Mersuch II, as well as broodmares 12 Siglavy Bagdady and 15 Koheilan IV. This is the dam line behind Brzytwa and Bulwa, Babolna mares that produced in Poland after World War II. Unfortunately 10 Gazal does not appear in the pedigrees of 25 Amurath Sahib or Siglavy Bagdady VI.

  4. “She was part of the Al Khamsa Roster Proposal on Babolna horses that passed recently.”?!
    Dear Jeanne, I don’t understand it.I didn’t heard anything.
What is the matter? What’s happened about it?
    Inform me,please!

    Best wishes,
    László
