Photo of the Day: Greggan, 1969 asil Saqlawi stallion in the USA

Another  beautiful asil stallion of the same generation as El Iat is Greggan (Ibn Gulida x Gharida by Bidaj), a Saqlawi Jadran who traces entirely (as in 100%) to the Crabbet Stud lines of Lady Anne and Wilfrid Blunt. The Doyle breeding program, which celebrate its sixty years in 2009, is based on the three foundation horses Ghadaf, Gulida and Nusi, is the only Arabian horse breeding program in the world to descend from old Crabbet (i.e., no Skowronek, no Dargree) lines only. The Doyle Arabians are a  true time capsule.

  1. There are some good photographs by Karsten Scherling of modern Doyle horses on the Asil Club website. Under the Event Archive tab. Go to 60 YEARS DOYLE – Open Barn in Oregon.

  2. This is a surprice for me,where can I find more information? They started with 3 horses, a lot of inbreeding now!
    Are they still breeding?

  3. Gerd, of course they are still breeding and have about 50 horses now on their farm. I will ask Rosemary Doyle to get in touch with you with more information.

  4. I was lucky enough to see Greggan in the flesh at the Melzac’s farm in West Virginia in the early 1980’s and this photo truly captures his spirit.

  5. I was fortunate enough to get to care for Greggan for several years. My daughter Emily, now 35, rode him with me at age 2. As beautiful as he was, it was his loving (but somtimes quirky) disposition that we loved most. He became quite a prima donna when it came to breeding mares. He wouldn’t tease. You had to tease with a young stallion and then bring him out – and if she raised a foot – too bad for her.

He passed that disposition on to his foals and his son Ghalidar became Emily’s best equine friend when she reached adulthood. Of all the Doyle stallions that I knew, he was my favorite.

And Tzviah – I remember when you came to visit us.
