Photos of the Day: Omran, 1964 Tunisian stallion in Germany

A few days ago, Michael Bowling sent me the following photos of the 1964 Tunisian stallion Omran (Esmet Ali x Simrieh by Oukrif), from the rare tail female that goes back to the desert-bred mare Mzeirib, imported to Tunisia by the French in 1891.  Omran was exported to one of Germany’s zoos, says Michael. The black and white photo was taken while the stallion was still in Tunisia, and the color one in Germany by Dr. Zimmerman of the Koln zoo, who gave both photos and others to Michael.

  1. I never heard of this stallion in Germany.
Perhaps because he comes from Tunisia Strain.
In Germany, Tunisians are not recognized by the Asil Club, and they have a very small lobby.

  2. He is a very striking colour – those deep burnt bays are so beautiful. It’s always interesting to see how different the same horse can look at different weights – in the photo taken in Tunisia, he looks longer in the back (though not at all long-backed), but in Germany, where he has a bit of a tummy, he looks much shorter-backed. He has a nice shoulder on him too, particularly evident in the first picture.
