Twelve Davenports of Christmas: Rababe CF

For our faithful readers who may be taking a break from unwrapping, photographing, and/or toasting, I’m offering a Davenport photo a day for the next twelve days. Do you know anyone who needs yet another partridge in a pear tree? Thought not.

Rababe CF and rider

Rababe CF, 1987 Hamdaniyah Simriyah (Lydian x Fiddledeedee). When not caring for small children, as in this photo, I understand she has a pretty impressive spin and sliding stop.

  1. Thanks Ambar for the charming photo that entices any of us to want to go for a free bareback gallop around the farm, one of my favorite things to do when I was younger here at our farm.

  2. Who’s the little one on the mare?

  3. Edouard, I believe that’s Aida Schreiber’s older daughter, but I don’t know for sure. Maybe Aida will drop by and tell us more about the photo.

Joe: not a Davenport story, but a Christmas ride story. Picture a snowy Christmas Day in southwestern Ohio. Picture a blood bay Paso Fino stallion, 3″ deep in winter coat. Picture a foot of new snow on the ground. Picture a brown paper grocery bag, full of tins of Christmas cookies destined for our neighbors. Picture me, 12yo, in a nylon snow suit, riding bareback.

The cookies were delivered successfully, but the only reason this worked is that the horse, a noble soul, would sidle under a rider who was losing their balance.

Bombero is a memory now (not to mention the snowsuit and the snow that prompted it), but the Christmas cookies are still a tradition, as several recent victims can testify. :D

  4. Fantastic story Ambar! I can picture it in my mind…. and what a great tradition. Thanks for sharing and Happy New Year!

  5. Thanks Ambar for sharing. What color was the snowsuit?

  6. Navy blue base with big red accents down each limb. (I admit, I had to refer to a picture of my brother in his matching suit for this one!)
