I have never seen these two pictures of the Saqlawi al-’Abd stallion Tripoli (Hanad x Poka by *Hamrah), the foundation sire of the modern Davenport program. Both are from the Davenport Arabian Horse Conservancy website.

  1. So Tripoli was only two generations off the desert? He essentially then came from horses that were bred with an expectation to be ridden rather than have makeup applied to their faces so they could be stood still and looked at. You can tell from the photos.

  2. Yes, to stand in the 1970s with a horse whose grandsires were born in the desert in 1904 was really special! He was different, and I have never seen his like.

  3. Tripoli was the most elegant, the most lively, and the most important sire I was ever around! He set the standard of excellence for all the various groups of Al Khamsa Horses.

In the very early Seventies, I was forced by Charles to see him last! Charles enjoyed my wait, yet, the wait was well worth it! What a horse, and what a great sire!

Charles’s since of humor was also something else, but that is a different story. One
that is steeped in a classic foundation of
    language and time.

They, Charles and Tripoli, a time gifting
    us here, special.

    Thanks for the photo’s……………

  4. That top shot really shows the width between his jowls, something that’s hard to appreciate in most horse photos.

  5. Regatta is not too far an approximation..

  6. Thanks for the kind words, Jackson. Jackson did an egg-tempera painting of Tripoli that is one of our treasures. He made the painting glow….

  7. Exactly Bruce!
