Iranian asil stallion Gap
I am so intrigued by these Iranian Asils. Some eight years ago, pictures of these were a fixture on my blog. I confess always having felt uneasy about the purity credentials of Iranian Arabian horses, mostly because Iran falls outside the cradle countries of the Arab horse. Pienaar Du Plessis and I were talking about this recently, and I confessed my attitude has more to do with my ignorance of these horses’ backgrounds than anything else.
Above, the Iranian stallion Gap (Charis x Yeltakin) from an Instagram thread. Strain Hamdani Simri, bred by Shirin Salartash, and owned by Harandi Kerman. He is stunning, and not unlike the good Bahraini horses.
I know very little about the Iranian asils, beyond having seen a few pictures here and there, but the photos I’ve seen show very attractive horses. Some of them even put me in mind of the relief carvings from the ancient world.
As for Gap, he is a lovely horse, and such a flashy colour too!
His dam was bred by the late Mary Gharagozlu. of whom a wonderful obituary is here:

According to the original poster of that photo, the sire was also bred by Mary. I haven’t been able to find the original photo on instagram, but I did also find another photo that looks to be the same horse and that also that shows his facial markings a little better, here.
One of the things I am noticing about the Iranians is they have relatively long legs that give the impression they are quite tall.
What was left of the horses of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi?
Moira, that is a most helpful photo. It puts him in context with his handler. He is a horse of normal height, maybe even a bit on the smallish side. Dry. The above photo shows his forearms and gaskins to be a bit stronger, so overall I like it better.
I would like to see him in the flesh, to see if he strikes me as more balanced. The photo looks slightly tilted, so the perspective is a bit off.
Look at that one:

They have the classic look. I would take anyone in my backyard, but I would like to ascertain the pedigrees the same way I can ascertain a Syrian or Lebanese pedigree for instance.
I would like to see the mares, too!
Jeanne: I see what you mean about the tilted business..His neck set appears very high indeed. Strong through the body.. If I were to nitpick his pasterns are a teensy bit long but not too bad.. Appears to have good bone to his size too.. if only the politicians would get their acts together so we could have access to the cradle country gene pools!!!!

Dear all,
I am looking for information, whether meanwhile the Asil lineages of the “Irani Asil” horses have been confirmed and are traceable and where one can find the information over many generations on the asil ancestors with information on the source of the strains?
Thanks and Regards
Danielle
