New translation of Ayerza imported stallion Marum, a Ubayyan Abu Jurayss b. 1890

I had been telling you about the strain of Ubayyan al-Khudr of the Bani Sakhr in earlier posts. I stumbled upon a reference to this strain, as I was doing a new translation of the hujjah (certificate of authenticity) of the Arabian stallion Marhum. This was a desert-bred horse born in 1890 and imported from the Middle East by Hernan Ayerza of Argentina in 1898.

Until now I had been laboring under the assumption that the signatories of the hujjah of Marhum were all ‘Anazah tribesmen. This assumption was based on an earlier translation I had done for Al Khamsa Arabians III (2008). Upon taking a closer look, they turn out of to have been tribal leaders of the Bani Sakhr. Here is my new translation of the hujjah, followed by some commentary:

In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate, and prayers and peace upon the Prophet of the Envoys.

After the Fatiha and prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad the pride of the worlds, on the side of the bay horse Abu al-Janhan [four illegible words describing the horse] with a snip on his nose [three more illegible words], on [our] honor and good fortune and money and children, [we say that] he is ‘Ubayyan Abu Jurayss on the mother’s side, from the horses of ‘Aftan [illegible last name] and his sire is ‘Ubayyan al-Khudr from the horses of al-Kharshan, an old strain.

We testify based on what we see and know, on our honor and good fortune, that he traces to the horses of al-Balqa.

And after the prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, the day we raided Wuld ‘Ali the first horse we took was Abu al-Janhan and he is the Ubayyan Abu Jurayss subject of this paper [four illegible words].

And after the prayers and peace upon the Seal of the Prophets we testify on this [three illegible words] and peace and prayers upon you O Prophet of God.

Marhum’s hujjah has the signature of the three leaders of the Bedouin tribe of Bani Sakhr in the 1890s: one of al-Fayiz, the clan that is now the leader of the tribe; one of al-Zibn; and one of al-Khreisha (i.e., Abu Drayb). In addition, the sire of Marhum is from the prized ‘Ubayyan al-Khudr “house strain” of the Bani Sakhr; and his dam appears to be from the horses of the Wuld Ali, a ‘Anazah tribe that bred and owned the ‘Ubayyan Abu Jurayss strain. So, all in all, this is a highly legitimate hujjah for a well authenticated horse, whose parents come from exactly where you’d expect them to come from.
