Photo of the Day: Satwan
With thanks to Jeanne Craver, a photo of the 1911 chestnut mare Satwan (*Deyr x *Haffia), a Ubayyan. Satwan persists in the straight Davenports through the Bint Ralf descendants; her full brother Harara is everywhere, most notably as the sire of Antez.
Satwan #100 was retained by her breeder, Hingham Stock Farm, long enough to raise one foal with her. She was bred as a 3-year-old to *Abbeian #111, and in 1915 when she was 4, she produced her son, Ashmar #156. He was her only registered foal. He sired Kokhleson #879, who is found in many modern pedigrees today. Ashmar #156 also sired the mare Mahala #2094, found in modern stock. Sometime after producing Ashmar #156, Satwan #100 was sold to Tetsuma Akahoshi of Japan and was exported to that country. Maybe Mrs. Craver can take us from Kokhleson to the Bint Ralph generation. I am aware that Miss Reba Troxell was involved in these lines surviving to the present.
Tim,
I updated the post with a link to Satwan’s entry in the Al Khamsa roster, which will let you follow both her Bint Ralf straight Davenport descendants and her Ibn Ralf combined source descendants. (Ralf, bred by Miss Troxell, was sired by Kokhleson. Maybe I should just do a post on Miss Troxell; I owe her a lot.)
Would totally enjoy hearing about Miss Troxell and her efforts to preserve the straight davenports.
