Skowronek’s non Arabian ancestors

The pedigree pages at skowronek.io pertaining to Skowronek’s non Arabian ancestors are updated and a new article discussing the local mares at the heart of his pedigree was published yesterday. Some of the horses referenced we have discussed previously on this site, so I will list them here for those that are interested:

The local mares including Szweykowska and Polka.

Stallions including Szumka I, Szumka II, Zboj, Gniady, and the sires of Sawicka Anusia, Sawicka Duza and Matka.

  1. I am thrilled that we have some background information on Szweykowska at last, even if it isn’t much. Knowing that her name probably indicates that she was owned at one point or bred by a Mr Szweykowski, and having two mares by that name in the Sanguszko Stud in 1799 is so much more information than I thought we would find. I wonder if she was the grey, or the chestnut, or perhaps the foal of the chestnut mentioned in that stud report, or whether she was none of these. At any rate, I am very glad, and very grateful, that these documents are now accessible – they warm my dusty little historian heart so very much. Thank you for the work you have put into collecting them and organising translations, and making this all freely available.

  2. What I find interesting is how these local mares were assigned Arab strains (Saqlawi, Kuhaylan) at some point in the twentieth century.

  3. I want to say it was Skorkowski who did that, based on skull shapes. In fact, I think you posted about that on this very blog, maybe ten years ago!

  4. I am quite eager to dig into the Skorkowski material. But I want to finish all the pre 1921 material first.

Everything after 1921 is essentially a reaction to Skowronek’s registration in Weatherbys and the AHS Stud Book based on fraudulent information presented by Potocki.

Skorkowski was very active writing in Polish in the late 20s and early 30s and some of what he wrote going to surprise quite a bit of people.
