I would have loved to visit Palmyra to see the ruins there, going all the way back to the Bronze Age, and I do hope the restoration project is successful. There is so much history in Syria and the rest of the Near and Middle East, and I wish that I knew more. I mean, it still comes as a surprise to me at times that Greek was spoken in Syria, and Christianity was a major religion there in the Roman period and beyond. And then I have to remind myself that that is only scratching the surface of the history of the region!
