Indie Star, asil 1998 Kuhaylan al-Krush stallion, USA

I am a big fan of the 1998 Kuhaylan al-Krush stallion Indie Star (Mandarin CF x Gbarh Asjah by Astrologer), bred by Carol Lyons. I really would like to breed a mare to him at some point. The photo is by Christine Emmert (who is a really good photographer) and was recently uploaded on the Davenport Arabian Horse Conservancy website. I had posted an earlier photo on this blog.

  1. Yes he is reminiscent of Mandarin, and of course a well built stallion too. But then Mandarin is one of the best built stallions in the United States. So did Lotus throw an escpecially good hindend on her get? If so maybe she would be good to line breed to?

  2. Ah, but if you start linebreeding to Lotus, will the descendants become more like her, or more different from her, as the linebreedng drive genes to homozygosity and thereby shows the underlying genetic variance? Remember, the breedings that produced Lotus and her dam were, within the context of modern straight Davenport breeding, relative outcrosses.

  3. Man, she got an even better hindend than mandarin.. She reminds me of the MSU stallion Amidore, who iirc was pretty much straight crabbet, but had enormous hindquarters, at least compared to Arabians nowadays. Ambar did you get foals from locket, and were they lucky enough to have the good engine too?

  4. No, more like Ivanhoe except Chestnut. Mandarin or his sister, both seem, via photo’s, long in the back? Porthos was also long in the back, in reality.

Yes, this is a very nice photo of action, and gives some insight as to type. Like most Krush, different! Most of the time in a good way. He and Ivanhoe could build a good start in Krush line breeding. Most likely will never happen! Times are different, and they are not in the mix for many Krush mares.

Line breeding Krush? We certainly did, the foals only got
more even as to balance. Regardless of sires! Some smaller, others taller. All were a good ride! Wired different then the Hafi, little more strut.

Thanks for posting the photo! jmh

  5. At different times, I rode all three of them (Lotus, Mandarin CF, Locket CF). Enjoyed them all.

I think the results of linebreeding Lotus would be very different from the results of linebreeding Asara.

  6. Jackson I measured Mandarins back length several times. In differing flesh he( like most horses)appeared to have a shorter or longer free span of the back. When he was slender he was just a three circle horse- equal proportions of hindquarters, back and shoulder. When he was fat he looked visibly short backed. His hip measured 20 and one half inches. For comparisons sake the hip on a thoroughbred i was riding at the time which stood 16.2, was not quite 22 inches.
So you see his engine was nearly as large as a much bigger horse.

  7. I did look, later, at the other photo’s that were on that particular site. The photo/illustrations were very lovely!

Always odd how photo’s distort. Very good breeding’s, and very good results, impressive! Carol was a gifted thinker, and her horses showed her abilities as an owner- breeder. Charles says, they had very little differences in thinking when it came to the Davenport’s. Carol was always a kind Soul. Perhaps the heart of Al Khamsa.

  8. Indie is certainly not long in the back!!!
I hope Bonnie will post pictures of his dam, I never saw her in the flesh but she looked like a wonderful mare full of substance.
It was quite hard to take pictures of Indie as Bonnie only had a small roundpen to turn him out. Vere very sweet stallion too.

  9. I just posted albums of Indie Star and his dam, Gbarh Asjah on Facebook. Jeanne, his son Raisuli is the one you came up and gave a hug to at Al Khamsa 2007. 🙂
