Mahboub Halep in 2021

A photo of the wonderful Syrian-bred Shuwaymah Sabbah stallion Mahboub Halep at Jean Claude Rajot several days ago. To me, this horse exemplifies the desert Arabian horse as he should be. I wish he had opportunities to cover mares from more diverse lineages. As Lady Anne Blunt said of Aziz in his prime: “He looks gorgeous”. Photo by Severine Vesco from social media.

  1. So he’s trotting up a hill right? Does he freeze? And if so what are the protocals . It would be interesting to do rotating outcrosses between the folks in texas who have the Bahreiny stallion, then to Helep, then back to the Treff Haven guys for an Egyptian outcross, followed by a Davenport- followed by one of the Doyle stallions giving 5 generations of NON- related to itself breeding.. All of them asil. The reason being that genomic study after genomic study of modern horses has remarked about the collapse of the Equine gene pool- so much so that researchers initially had difficulty telling one Y chromosome from another and stated that there was only 1 founder stallion for modern horses which sounds crazy when you think about it. The recently concluded study which caught racing breeders sneaking Byerly Turk Thoroughbreds into so called racing Arabians apparently demonstrates that the science has caught up to reality enough so that we can tell at least a Thoroughbred genetic signature from a, for example, New Egyptian genetic signature. Progress of a sort. I would love to get started on this project now that i’m retired- but I have to get vaccinated for Covid first, after which it is going to be Katy bar the door.

    1. Bruce, which study was that. I was aware of the Whalebone mutation being outlined, which is a Darley sireline, and hadn’t heard anything about the Byerly Turk sireline being documented.

  2. Moira: It was in genetic diversity and the origin of the Arabian horse.. It states,” 5 of the race line horses carried Tb-ob1 haplogroup attributed to the Byerly Turk foundation sire of the Thoroughbred breed.” The study goes on to say the Tb-ob1 is also found in Turkomen( sp) horses today too.. But here’s the thing which Turkomens are we talking about the remnant of the Turkomens that the Soviets ruined by admitted sneaking known Thoroughbreds into them, or ,’ real,’ Turkomens from Iran bred by Iranian people who weren’t communist liars? I think its the real Turkomen branch, but I’m not positive.
This whole issue should be spotlighted by Al Khamsa and Asil breeders everywhere in order to remove the dishonestly bred horses from the gene pool. The race bred horses could be sent off to be crossed with Shagyas and Gidrans for example. As one can make a good argument for majority arabian bred sporthorses that are large enough for man to ride.
The other thing is, that this kind of genetic work might also help the Polish breeders to establish their bonafides. If Thoroughbred and Tarpan genetics don’t show up in the Polish horses that would i think help to remove some of the doubt that has lingered over them from the days of the Czarist Russian appendix partbred stud book i.e. Skowroneks dam line.
    what say you?
