Top ten greatest Asil Arabian mares ever bred

It’s Friday afternoon, and I am in a light mood. So I have a game (again!) for you all. Give me your ultimate top ten list of the greatest Asil Arabian mares ever bred.

Here are the rules of the game:

1. The mares need to be Asil. A working definition of Asil for the purposes of this game is: Al Khamsa eligible if the mares are from bloodlines imported to North America, Asil Club eligible if the mares are from bloodlines imported to Europe, and tracing exclusively to Bedouin-bred horses if the mares are in Arab countries. For a more accurate (and conceptual) definition of Asil, click here.

2. The mares don’t need to be alive now: they may have been bred as early as the late XIXth century (when photography was invented).

3. You have to provide me with at pictures of at least two mares out of ten, preferably your top 2.

4. You don’t need to justify why you have ranked them the way you did (but it would nice if you did)

 5. You can be the current or former owner of all ten mares (but it would be nice if you included at least some mares owned or bred by others in your rankings, for the sake of fairness)

So, I did get you scratching your heads after all, eh?

  1. Vey nice quizz Edouard

    In my opinion one of the greatest who reach the west is
    “Nichab” bred by lady Stanhope in the Lebanese mountains, from a mare offered to her by the “Sbaa” tribe the sire was the saklawi stallion of sheikh Bashir Jumblatt.you can find her story in Carl Raswan index ,I read her story also in “Damoiseau” book “voyage en Orient” damoiseau was the vet who came with the des Portes french mission in 1819/1820 to the Levant to buy stallions for the French gov.
    They bought 40 stallions, among them the famous “massoud” founder of the anglo-arab race;
    “nichab” was privately bought by des Portes from lady Stanhope and sold her in france to the duchess of ngouleme ,the king’s sister;
    “nichab” progeny both in pure arab or in anglo-arab was so fantastic that if you go to the french national stud in pompadour you may buy a post card of “nichab” i use to have the post card sowhere ,ihave to look for i.
    I have in my possession “Damoiseau” original book 1835 print;For Edouard and myself it is a fantastic book to read because we know almost all the places visited by the mission /Aleppo and its region ,Hama ,Homs,Tripoli,Saida, the Shouf mountains,

  2. At first, I thought it would be an easy quiz Edouard but the biggest challenge for me, was limiting myself to 10 mares. Some of the mares, I personally have known and others, produced horses that will always be unforgettable for me.
