Saraly El Shahin, 1994 asil Hamdaniyah Simriyah in Hungary

I have been telling you about that Hamdani Simri line in Europe, the one from the mare Sobha of Ali Pasha Sharif, which went to the Crabbet Stud and eventually to the Courthouse Stud. A Hungarian preservation breeder, Laszlo Kiraly, bought what seems to be the last three registered asil mares from that line, Saraly El Shahin. The other two still need to be located. There might be a couple more who are not registered. The mares have been through a lot, after leaving the care of their breeder and last preservation owner, Penelope Pembleton.

Laszlo sent me pictures of Saralee, who is still recovering and still in poor shape, some of which are below.

I also found some pictures of one of Saralee’s ancestors in the tail female, the beautiful and very desert-like Courthouse mare Somra II (Fedaan x Safarjal by Rasim). He sire was the desert-bred Saqlawi Jadran of Ibn Zubayni stallion Fedaan, imported by Mr Clark of the Courthouse Stud to the UK in the 1920s.  With desert-bred, well authenticated, beautiful grey horses like Fedaan and Mirage in the UK in the 1920s, there was really no need for Skowronek. Oh well.

  1. Good for you Lazlo..I will say some prayers and cross my fingers that you can get the mares in foal! Edouard wasn’t one of the reasons Lady Wentworth didn’t use the Courthouse horses because she allegedly had registration issues?- But then how to explain that Mirage was registered over here in the states with apparent ease? hmm Or was it more likely that Mr. Clark was equally knowledgeable as she, and apparently just as skilled a breeder.

  2. What a lovely mare Somra II was, guess that explains why I have always liked horses from this line 🙂

If Lady Wentworth would have been allowed to register Mirage, she would probably have not bought Skowronek.

  3. Congratulations Laszlo! This dam line is recognized by Al Khamsa even though it was not in North America thanks to a proposal by Carol Schulz in 1986-87. I believe that Tzviah Idan was also involved and she had tracked down the people in England who owned Sappho’s daughters/granddaughters that would be Al Khamsa eligible. Sadly nothing came of it in all that time until now when Laszlo has obtained this line and we are certainly all grateful. This line of Sohba is the female line of Poland’s famous sire Palas.

    1. there are three registered asil sisters: Saree, Sabla and Selmaly.

Selmaly is asil, she is by Ansata Aly Jamil out of Selmah, and she was born in 1994, No registered progeny

Saree has three registered asil, Saraly, Sahaly, Aly Sary (by Ansata Aly Jamil), a mare who was born in 1997. ALso No registered progeny.

Sabla has one registered asil daughter Sablaly (by Ansata) born in 1995, and one son Sablal form 1994, and another son Aly Jamil from 1999. So two potential stallions.

Saraly and Sahaly have no registered asil progeny..

  4. Saraly is a little, but fine and lovely arabian mare.
She has very big, expressive eyes, just like the spanish arabians.
I like her,and i will pray for her pregnancy too.
The asil egyptian stallion Ghamin (Naheed x E-Gharlima) will be the first partner for Saraly.

    Best wishes,
    László

  5. If Lady Wentworth would have been allowed to register Mirage, she would probably have not bought Skowronek.

Except that she already owned Skowronek when she bought *Mirage.

Weatherby’s General Stud Book closed to newly imported horses after registering Skowronek and Dwarka. Other desert imports on the ground in England during the 1920s, such as the Clark stallions Nimr, Atesh, and Fedaan, were still eligible to be entered in the stud book of the Arab Horse Society, so they were entered in that book. Lady Wentworth, at the time, insisted on Weatherby’s registration for her horses, so she would have been reluctant to use the Clark desert lines for that reason. Additionally, the Clarks were furious with Lady Wentworth after they learned she had tricked them into selling Skowronek to her in 1920. Later, Lady Wentworth gave the Clarks Safarjal, in foal with Sainfoin, as a peace offering, but the relationship between the Clarks and Lady Wentworth was always strained.

*Mirage was registered with ease in the U.S. simply because the stud book here, unlike Weatherby’s, was not closed to new imports.

  6. Laszlo, Congratulations on saving this lovely mare. Back in the 1990’s Carole Brown and I tried to track down and somehow register some of Penny Pembleton’s horses of the Hamdani Simri strain which were then in Austria, but were not successful. I still have all my correspondence on this, and Edouard was quite interested in the project as well. However, no luck.

What you have done is quite an accomplishment and I hope and pray that she is able to be brought back into production for you.
Well done and best of luck,
    Tzviah

  7. Thanks for the good wishes..

In november 2009 I spoke about the buying these Hamdani mares with a Mr Kern.We cannot made a deal.Until now we didn’t find the mares. They lost… but not for ever…Some weeks ago Stephanie Weirich, our german breederpartner for asil horses, wrote me a mail. She found this precious mare for me (for us,I think).
    Thank you Steffi!
Then i bought Saraly. The seller was the original owner (and breeder)Mr.Gerhard Kropf.

I asked the studmanager of El Shahin Arabians about the mares.
Partly from her we knows the following things:
    Selmah(1977.Shaks x Sappho)had:
    Sabla(1987.by Jamil)died in 2006.( in heart attack)
    Saree(1989 by Salaa El Dine
Selmaly(1994.by Ansata Aly Jamil Was sold, but no information, where she is.

Sabla’s only asil daughter,Sablaly is died
The asil daughters of Saree are:
Saraly (1994.by Ansata Aly Jamil now in Hungary at my stud.
Sahaly (1995.by Ansata Aly Jamil died in 2011.(ossified joints chips)
Aly Sary(1997.by Amsata Aly Jamil) died in 2003.(gastric rotation)

The question is, where is Selmaly. Lives,or not? Has asil progeny or not?

In the next few days we will make an ultrasound controll, then we want to breed with this small, but lovely mare.

We want a foal…if it is possible. A Hamdaniyah Simriyah…Saraly had the last foal in 2006…..I’m afraid this will be not simple.

  8. Oh, just found this post upon more digging, please disregard the earlier one. I am assuming that Salome Hamdaniya was bred by Laszlo, then. Was she the only issue to come of efforts to perpetuate the line?

  9. Oh my god I just found this post. I must have seen all these horses because I visited Gerhard Kropf’s stud twice when I lived in Austria. The reason why he did not get papers on the horses was because he was suspended from the Austrian registry reasons I will not repeat here. In those days my knowledge was good but not as much as I know now. And due to the horses not having papers I could not know their pedigrees. I believe I have some info on the stud in my archive. This is so interesting. I do have studbooks from that time, but already saw that the mares who are spoken about in this article were suspended in the studbook, but I will have a look at it. He did have a Crabbet mare I remember who was for sale, cant remeber her name. Let me get back to this after a little search. Laslo did you succed in getting a foal?

  10. Dear Monique,

as far as I know, sadly, the stud owner had financial problems in the business , then also against the Registry. I haven’t heard any others, but yes, he had not registered the horses in the last years of the stud.Thank God, Saraly was not among the unregistered horses.
She was born in 1994 by Ansata Aly Jamil and out of Saree, who was bred by Penelope Pmebleton.

    Best regards,
    László

  11. Monique,

I look forward to seeing what you are able to dig up! It really is terribly tragic that the horses ended up bearing the consequences of their human caretaker’s actions :c

    László,

Thanks for the confirmation, and wonderful! She’s, what, three this year, rising four? May I inquire into what her future breeding career will look like?

  12. Let me add my name to the list of people anxious to know what you are able to discover about these important links to the past.

  13. I’m reviewing this since it’s in my notes for the Courthouse horses. Did the following horses ever get located–?

1994 GS SABLAL EL SHAHIN (*Ansata Aly Jamil x Sabla)
1995 CM SABLALY EL SHAHIN (same as above)
1999 GS ALY JAMIL EL SHAIN (same as above)

Did Saraly ever get in foal in 2019? Has her daughter Salome Hamdaniya been bred for a replacement foal yet?

Did we ever find any of the other horses László spoke of?

    What did Monique discover?

    So many questions, apologies :O
