The champion of my world

Yesterday I learned that Wisteria had died in January 2020, at 25 years of age. She was the reason for my love for Arabians of Davenport bloodlines. She was also the first horse I owned in the US, fourteen years ago. She had “wondeful eyes, very great style and beauty“, like Jauza in the words of Lady Anne Blunt. The best photos of her were never taken.

  1. I almost bought Wisteria’s dam, HB Wadduda, as a yearling in 1980. Instead I bought HB Wadduda’s younger full sister, HB Delilah. HB Wadduda ended up going to Craver Farms a few years later, and was then leased to Mike and Julie Briggs, and I helped with her foal there in 1984. This was when she had Watir El Bedu. Everything seemed to go well with the foaling, and then I offered to stay up a little longer to keep an eye on him so everyone else could get some sleep. Wisteria was a beautiful mare; if Charles Craver’s health had allowed him to continue breeding with a couple of mares after the main portion of his herd had been dispersed, I think Wisteria is one he would have chosen.

  2. My condolences to all who knew and admired her. She was truly a lovely mare, and a fantastic producer. I also had the good fortune to know HB Wadduda, an elegant lady. Wish her son Medici CF had been able to sire some offspring. What a great family!

  3. “The best photos of her were never taken.” Perfect.

Jenny, I so agree with you about Medici. He was wonderful (as was his sire, Florentine, of course!)

  4. I failed to mention I had Wisteria’s half sister Affection CF, x Ibn Alamein, almost all of her life. She was a quite different mare than Wisteria, being a lady of some “substance.” Still a lovely, big mover and sweet, yet mischievous nature. Life got in the way and I never obtained foals from her. A great loss to me and Davenport breeding.

  5. She was a truly lovely mare, i’m so sorry for your loss, but ever so happy that she touched your life, as you continue to touch all of ours. My condolences. She will be well remembered.
