Toward a New Manifesto of the Arabian Breed نحو بيان عام جديد للحصان العربي

A lot of discussion has been going on lately by Arabian horse lovers and enthusiasts from the six contents about the future of the Arabian breed. Maintaining the breed purity of blood (the Asil concept), preserving the original qualities and characteristics of the Arabian Horse, the genetic diversity and integrity of the breed, the status of the unregistered desert-bred Asil horses, are all among the concerns of the community.

كثير من النقاشات تدور مؤخرا بين محبي الحصان العربي من القارات الست حول مستقبل السلالة العربية. المحافظة على نقاء الدم ومفهوم الأصالة، استدامة الصفات ومقومات الجودة الأصلية للحصان العربي، التنوع والسلامة الجينية للحصان العربي، وضع الخيول البدوية غير المسجلة، كل هذا من ضمن ما يشغل المهتمين.

There is a kind of consensus that something has to be done. A new era has to begin that is based on more acknowledgement of the breed original qualities and characteristics, more understanding and learning of its historical background, more respect of its cultural values and context, more cooperation between the West and East including those of Arab descent who still carry the cultural values and knowledge, and nevertheless, more adoption of the scientific tools, specifically the genetic science, in setting a new solid scientific basis for the future of the breed.

هناك شبه اجماع أن شيئا ما يجب أن يحدث. عصر جديد يجتاج أن يبدأ يرتكز على الإقرار بمقومات وصفات الحصان العربية الأًصلية، وعلى فهم وتعلم الخلفيات التاريخية للسلالة العربية، وعلى احترام أكبرللقيم والسياق الثقافي المصاحب، وعلى تعاون أكبر بين الشرق والغرب بما في ذلك أبناء الثقافة العربية الذين لا يزالون يحملون الولاء والمعرفة بثقافتهم. وأخيرا وليس آخرا تبني الأدوات العلمية وخاصة علوم الجينات في صياغة مستقبل السلالة العربية على أسس علمية سليمة.

In this series of articles I propose what I call it a new “Manifesto of the Arabian Breed”. A declaration of principles that can govern our future efforts to preserve and maintain the breed and deal with the different kinds of risks and concerns. Also a well-thought-of definition supported by clear criteria and methods to identify the breed.

في هذه السلسلة من الموضوعات سوف أقترح ما أسميه البيان العام (المنافيستو) الجديد للحصان العربي. إعلان مباديء يحكم مساعينا المستقبلية للمحافظة على الحصان العربي وصيانته والتعامل مع المخاطر والإشكالات المحيطة به. وكذلك وضع تعريف معد بعناية ومدعوم بمعايير وأساليب واضحة لتحديد هوية السلالة العربية.

What I am going to propose is far from being complete and final, but only a seed for discussion and brainstorming. I do not attribute this initiative to myself as it is based on many other and earlier proposals. I strongly hope this initiative will grow into something actionable, and I am very confident we can reach something together to start the new era we aspire for.

ما سأقترحه لا يزال بعيدا عن  أن يكون مكتملا ونهائيا، لكنه يمثل نواة للنقاش وتوليد الأفكار. لا أنسب هذه المبادرة لنفسي فهي مبنية على كثير من المقترحات السابقة من آخرين. آمل بشدة أن تنمو هذه المبادرة إلى شيء قابل للتنفيذ، وكلي ثقة أننا نستطيع أن ننجز شيء سويا وأن نساهم في بدأ الحقية الجديدة التي نصبو إليها.
