Sidi Mabrouka

I have to admit that this mare has always been a favourite of mine, ever since I saw her at my first endurance ride at the age of sixteen. One of her owners, Mr. Paul Kotzé of Diepsand Stud, sent me some screenshots of her, that I will replace when I receive the photos. The photos were taken when she was already 23, after foaling, but you can still see what a quality mare she was.

Sidi Mabrouka was bred by Mr. A.W.A. (Jack) Maritz of Farm Kamkuip, South Africa. She is by Raafeek[imp] (Ibn Morafic x Surrayah, by Morafic) out of Sahîby Juleemah (Ahir[imp] x Sahîby Noura, by Ahir[imp]). She falls within the earlier non-Minstril group of offspring.

List of registered offspring (South African Studbook):

  • Durakha Sarab, by W.D. Majesty[imp] (Prince Fa Moniet x Lar Monieta, by A.K. Shah Moniet) 1991 stallion. No offspring.
  • Sabaa Hamdan, by Sabaa Ibn Muneera (Sidi Ibn Muneera x Durakha Arisa, by Ahir[imp]), 2000 stallion. Sired one filly, Sabaa Juleemah. Status: “Biological Identification Required”. No registered offspring.
  • Kibriya Nishkur – to be discussed later.

Sidi Mabrouka then found her way to the Tir’at Stud of Mr. P.A.L. Nel, a long-time friend of Dr. Valérie Noli-Marais. At my first endurance ride that I mentioned earlier, I summoned up all my courage to start a conversation with him and I found out he once owned the stallion Sahîby Rifky full brother to Sahîby Juleemah. It was during Mabrouka’s time at the Tir’at Stud that she got the nickname “Ou Stoomtrein”, Afrikaans for “Old Steam Train”. She would kick up dust because of her flat action.

List of registered offspring (Namibian Studbook):

  • Tir’at Munifa, by Sabaa Ibn Muneera, 2001 mare. Produced three foals, all died without offspring.
  • Tir’at Miraka, by Sidi Egyptian King (W.D. Majestyimp] x Sahîby Juleemah, by Ahir[imp]), 2009 mare. Produced a 2016 daughter, Diepsand Bint Miraka. No registered offspring.

The only one of Sidi Mabrouka’s foals to leave a lasting legacy was her 1994 son Kibriya Nishkur, sired by  Sahîby Juleemah and Sahîby Rifki’s maternal half-brother Sidi Abu Khai. He sired 43 foals (SASB).

  1. Serious length of hip on Sidi Mabrouka. She is a three circle horse even though she does appear to be a bit on the thin side. Greater amounts of flesh through the body tend to make a horses functional span of the back appear shorter such that the more weight they lose the longer their back appears- conversely when they put on the pounds it also appears to shorten their back.

  2. So Tir’at Miraka is her only asil daughter, correct? Or I guess I should say was, given that she’s dead … oh, and Diepsand Bint Miraka is not asil. Gosh, so this branch of the Baraka tail female is extinct in asil form, and given that Tir’at Munifa is twenty this year, it’s almost entirely extinct in any form. Thank goodness that Kibriya Nishkur bred on, to keep this branch going in mid-pedigree.

  3. I tracked Tirat Miraka down, only to learn that she was bittten by a snake three or four years ago.
