On stallions used by the Tai in the XXth century

There was another important aspect of my recent series of conversations with Abu Tamer, Hammad Jaddu’ al-Jaz’aa, the venerable Tai Bedouin owner of a hundred year old marbat of Saqlawi Jadran Arabian horses known as the Saqlawiyyat of Dari al-Mahmud (or Saqlawiyyat Dariyyat as they have been calling them these days).

It relates to the stallions him, his brothers and their father Jaddu’ al-Jaz’ah before them used to breed to their mares. He mentioned them using the following desert-bred stallions over the decades:

The grey Kuhaylan Krush of Juhayyhim al-Mitkhan of the Tai, a horse Juhayyim got from the Shammar Jarba (early 1980s and 1970s)

The black Kuhaylan Haifi of Juhhayim al-Mitkhan, a horse of Tai lineage (early 1970s and 1960s)

The stallion of Muhammad al-Fajri of the Shammar, a Saqlawi Shaifi of the strain of Ibn Bisra (1970s)

The fleebitten grey stallion of Bunyan al-Mujwil (al-Jarba), named “al-Sarukh”, a Saqlawi Shaifi of the strain of Ibn Bisra, born with the Jawwlah of Tai, but originally of Shammar stock (early 1970s and 1960s)

The chestnut Kuhaylan Ibn Jlaidan of Bardan ibn Jlaidan of the Shammar (early 1970s and 1960s)

The second horse of ‘Ebbo al-Humayyid, a bay Saqlawi Jadran of the Dariyyat (early 1960s and 1950s)

The bay horse of Munayyis al-Sa’adi, named “Abu Kitf”, a Saqlawi Nijm al-Subh of the strain of the Maraaziiq, or Saqlawi Marzaqani (1960s and 1950s)

The first horse of ‘Ebbo al-Humayyid, also a Saqlawi Jadran of the Dariyyat (1940s and 1930s) – his stock raced in Beirut

The horse of al-Ajarrash of the Shammar, a Dahman Amer of Shammar stock (1930s) – his stock raced in Beirut

  1. Trying to match some of these horses to the Syrian studbook – is the grey Kuhaylan Krush of Juhayyhim al-Mitkhan of the Tai the horse sired by the Ubayyan Suhayli of Abd al-Aziz al-Maslat, the one who descends from Douhaymane al-Ajarrache/the Dahman Amer of Sattam al-Ajarrash? Or is he the Krush Al Baida sired by the Kuhaylan Haifi of Juhayyhim al-Mitkhan?

Which then brings me to the question, is the black Kuhaylan Haifi of Juhhayim al-Mitkhan the same horse as the one whom the studbook records as the sire of the second Krush of Juhayyim al-Mitkhan? He is the sire of Mustafa al-Jabri’s Mimrahiyah mare Ameenah, correct?

As for the Saqlawi Shaifi of the strain of Ibn Bisra of Muhammad al-Fajri of the Shammar, is he the same horse as the paternal grandsire of the Ubayyat al-Hunaydees Mouna belonging to Mustafa al-Jabri? Or is he a different Saqlawi Ibn Bisra? I am leaning towards the latter option, but can’t find a Saqlawi Ibn Bisra of Muhammad al-Fajri in the studbook at the moment.

Then the other Saqlawi Ibn Bisra, al-Sarukh of Bunyan al-Mujwil, I presume he’s the damsire of the 1985 bay Kuhaylat al-‘Ajuz Majeedah A0400?

The chestnut Kuhaylan Ibn Jlaidan of Bardan ibn Jlaidan of the Shammar I assume is the damsire of Mustafa al-Jabri’s Kuhaylat al-‘Ajuz Ibn Jlaidan Nadrah?
