Shibboleth

Kate and I were looking at the 1898 reprint of Sarah Buckman-Linard’s book “My Horse; My Love,” which is available as a public domain book on Archive.org courtesy of the University of Toronto (so, no need to buy the very poorly scanned reprints that are available via retailers right now!)

This is a photo of Shibboleth, said to be the sire of both Kars and Sherifa in the book.

The photos within this book, and the information, were apparently courtesy of both the Rev. F. Furse Vidal and Lady Anne Blunt. This is the first I have ever heard of a named (and photographed) sire of Kars, and I have to admit that I’m thrown for a loop here. Any more verse members of the community have more information on him to offer as we dig for more?

A thought, however – the door and what have you is quite similar to that of what we see in the background of the infamous El Emir photo. Not sure what to make of that, either.

Edit: This is the daughter of Kars and Sherifa. A connection, but not the one cited. Still, neat to see a photo of her.

  1. This is the 1884 grey mare Shiboleth, bred by the Blunts at Crabbet, sired by Kars and out of Sherifa. She was owned by Miss Dillon, who bred the 1894 colt Seyyid from her, by El Emir. And you are right about the background barn (?) door being the same background used for photos of others of Miss Dillon’s horses, including El Emir.

  2. Thanks for fact checking on that, R.J.! I have a couple of other photos that depict horses in front of that same barn.

  3. There’s another photo from this publication, cited as being TRIGONIA, the dam of Kouch and Aurora [x] Allbreed tells me that Kouch is actually the dam of Trigonia, so there is that. I’ll need to approach these photos and horses when I’m not still coming off anesthesia, though haha

  4. Oops, I definitely need to proofread better. I meant to say “sire.” Looking at it with rested eyes, I see that Trigonia is an Anglo-Arabian, her dam Aurora being a through and through Thoroughbred.

And really? I suppose if they’re both grey, and they’re both Arabian stallions…

  5. Whups. I’ve been making the mistake of associating Kars with greys lately – probably through his offspring out of Basilisk. Thanks for the correction O:

  6. Facing p. 241 of that book is a plate of “two Arab mares in the act of jumping, at stud farm, Needham Market.” They look like Shiboleth and Trigonia to me.

  7. I do believe you may be correct. I did actually have that photo of the mares in the queue for scheduled posts, funnily enough. It’s a shame that she didn’t produce on outside of the Dillon and Vidal programs.
