Kate found this article in the December 18, 1937 edition of the London Illustrated News. It covers the Saudi desert-bred Arabians gifted by Saudi King Abd al-Aziz ibn Saud to British King George VI, in return for the hospitality extended to his son Crown Prince Saud ibn Abd al-Aziz at the Coronation event of King George VI in May 1937 in London. It looks like the horses were sent some six months after his trip. The royal gift seems to have consisted of four horses, two males and two females: *Turfa, Faras, Kasim and Manak. *Turfa appears in the photo in the upper left corner. A better version of this photo is in Peter Upton’s “The Arabian Horse” with the caption “Turfa in Port-Said” (or something similar). Because she was the only grey of that lot, the photo under that one must also be hers. If that’s the case, then we’d have the first quasi facial view of *Turfa.
